The Canon EF 100mm USM Macro is extremely well made, has fast, silent USM focusing and life size magnification. It has remarkable BOKEH, gives a reasonable amount of comfort space when shooting insects, and even works great for portraits with the 2.8 aperture. This lens has a "focus limiter" switch which allows faster auto-focusing for normal use. Coupled with a Kenko Pro 300 tele-converter, all auto functions work fine, and gives even more versatility. Note: this lens will not work with a Canon EF 1.4 or 2X converter (unless an extension tube is placed between lens and tube, use at own risk). And while Canon doesn't recommend using the EF 1:1 Life Size Converter, I've found it works well in manual focus without damage. But use at own risk if you do it yourself. With converters, it's necessary to use manual focusing to avoid camera lock up. If using auto focus, "err 99" will result. If this happens, turn your camera off and back on and the error should clear. To maintain the sharpest images above life size, extension tubes offer addedmagnification with minimum loss of quality, though tubes decrease focus distance. Below is a chart showing the additional magnification gained, and lens to subject distance when used with Canon Extension Tubes. "After market" tubes render similar results.Note: When using TTL (through the lens metering) it isn’t necessary to figure exposure compensation since metering is done at film / sensor plane.Magnification and Effective f-Numbers for Canon EF 100mm f/2.8 USM Macro:
